Claims of "significant progress" notwithstanding, Obama's executive actions and Biden's cheerleading will endanger lives, not save them.

December 3, 2013
The administration has "completed or made significant progress" on the 23 executive actions on guns President Obama announced last January, a Dec. 2 email advisory sent out under the name of Vice President Joe Biden claimed.

The email links to a White House web page presenting a summary of those actions under the heading of "Protecting our kids" and over a photo of the Executive Mansion flying a flag at half-staff. The message is clear to those who know how to discern it: This is an appeal to the emotions.

"President Clinton signed the Brady Bill into law," the email recalls. "It was a historic piece of legislation -- one that's kept 1.5 million of the wrong people from getting their hands on a firearm in the last 14 years."

Along with targeting feelings, the skilled propagandist knows how to present distorted conclusions as undisputed facts. In reality, not that most signed up to receive White House emails are likely to know or care, analysis shows "Virtually all of those denied purchasing a gun are false positives." Naturally, that inconvenient truth is given no regard in the White House claim. Nor is the Vice President's astounding admission that "We simply don't have the time or manpower to prosecute everybody who lies on a form [Firearms Transaction Record Form 4473]" for those instances where an actual felony has been committed.

"But in the wake of the tragedy in Newtown -- a year ago this month -- we know we've got to keep working to build on that progress," the White House flack ghostwriting for Biden sets up a false premise. "And so even after a minority of Senators blocked commonsense legislation to reduce gun violence this spring, we're pushing forward."

"Progress..."

"Pushing forward..."

All the traditional buzzwords (noting what that tradition is) are placed right where they need to be for calculated effect. The White House knows those who agree will never question why more laws are needed when old ones have demonstrably proven useless at achieving their stated goals.

As for "commonsense," how ending private sales among good people will deter the bad is left unexplained. Showing once more how the administration contradicts itself, no less a source than the National Institute of Justice concluded in January that "universal background check ... effectiveness depends on the ability to reduce straw purchasing, requiring gun registration..."

The White House knows prohibited persons are exempt from registering their guns (the Supreme Court has ruled requiring them to do so would violate their Fifth Amendment protection against self-incrimination). They also know the historic (and ongoing) results of such lists in the hands of governments hostile to private gun ownership. Their assertion that this is "commonsense," with the implied conclusion it is "reasonable," depends on their followers either not knowing these things, or knowing and embracing ends-justify-the-means deception.

"President Obama laid out 23 executive actions to make sure the Administration took essential and rapid steps to save lives while respecting our Second Amendment rights," the announcement contradicts itself. None of Obama's proposals have anything to do with arming and training the citizen militia or with ensuring the right of the people to keep and bear arms is not infringed, except for ignoring the former and eviscerating the latter.

"No parent should ever face the horror of the scene at Sandy Hook Elementary School," the email admonishes. "Or a movie theater in Aurora. Or a temple in Oak Creek. Or the campus at Virginia Tech. We've seen too much gun violence as a country. And if there's even one thing we can do to save a life, it is our most sacred duty to try."

Taking all kinds of unearned credit notwithstanding, what's immediately evident is Obama's list of non-achievements will not save one life but will endanger plenty. That this administration considers it "sacred" to demand people be helpless in the face of incidents like Sandy Hook or Aurora or Virginia Tech should tell moral, rational and informed person all they need to know. The calculating minds behind this, of course, are counting on a critical mass of the ignorant, the emotional and the easily manipulated to mindlessly swallow things whole, as they've been conditioned to do every time the Big Lie is repeated, restated, and expanded upon.
