Anyone who has studied organic chemistry knows about a fellow named Kekule.
Kekule elucidated the structure of Benzene. Benzene was known to be C6H6 by Kekule its structure was puzzling as the number of carbons and the number of hydrogens did not fit in with what was known at the time, 1865.
Kekule came up with the following structure of benzene after having a dream about a snake biting his tail.

I interpret that instance of inspiration as an example of having one's subconscious mind work on a problem and then reveal to the conscious mind by some process the result and thus the solution to the problem.

I had a similar process happen to me when I was in my senior year of a chemistry program at Hayward State, the summer of 1969. Seniors were allowed to take first year graduate level classes in the masters degree program which was just starting.

The class was called "Non-Classical Carbonium Ions" using a book "Nonclassical Ions" written by Paul D. Bartlett.
